Newbie Mac tip: The new PowerBooks ("AlBooks") can run with the lid closed if an external display and keyboard are connected. The PowerBook must be started with the lid open, then the lid can be closed and the computer woken up with a keypress. iBooks cannot run with the lid closed.

Well, they suggest you don't run an iBook with the lid closed ("in clamshell mode") but you certainly can, with a patch and a prayer. Here's a <a href="http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/3753">recent Ask MetaFilter thread</a> on the subject.
<grumbles about dehtmlification>
Dan, that iBook technote is specifically about one model of iBook, the iBook (Dual USB), which was introduced in 2001. I don't know if the no-clamshell-mode limitation applies to all iBooks.
