There are many ways to contribute funds to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts. 1-800-HELP-NOW is their monetary donation line. If you can't get through, Amazon.com has set up a donation page using their tip jar mechanism. (Of course, Amazon is waiving its tip jar service fee-- 100% of your donation goes to Red Cross.)

20 hours, over a million dollars. Nice.
Probably a mere fraction of what Red Cross will need, and probably a mere fraction of what people can or currently are giving to this or other causes, but it's still great to see a single effort off to the side of the Internet collect so much money so quickly. (No doubt in no small part thanks to Amazon's dedicating their gateway to the cause.)

Not that it isn't obvious why everyone around the world has been deeply moved by this tragedy, but it's still quite amazing how people have been compelled to give. I've never heard of so many people wanting to give blood, and the Amazon.com donation page, as of 11:35pm PT on September 11, is up to $171,917.00 from 7098 donors. We've all been moved, but so many of us have so few ways we can help.
